Born in Canada, Destined for Luxury
The story of the Pearl Mist began in 2006 when Pearl Seas Cruises—an affiliate of American Cruise Lines—ordered a new, custom-designed small ship. It was to be the flagship of a premium, boutique ocean-going experience.
Designed to offer an intimate atmosphere with high-end comfort, her construction was handed to Irving Shipbuilding (Halifax Shipyards) in Nova Scotia, Canada. The keel was laid down on July 23, 2007, and the ship was launched with great anticipation on March 14, 2008.
The Four-Year Legal Standstill
What should have been a standard fitting-out process quickly turned into a major corporate battle. Just five months into construction, a fierce dispute erupted between Pearl Seas Cruises and Irving Shipbuilding over licensing standards, vessel certifications, and build quality.
- The Standoff: The ship was physically completed in June 2010, but the cruise line refused to accept delivery.
- The Exile: For nearly four years, Pearl Mist sat completely idle and abandoned to the elements at the Shelburne Ship Repair facility in Nova Scotia, waiting for the legal dust to settle.
Finally, after a United States Federal Appeals Court ruling in 2013, a settlement was reached. The ship was towed to Baltimore, Maryland, where Chesapeake Shipbuilding spent the next year completing her interior and final outfitting.
The Grand Debut (June 2014)
Six years after she was launched, the Pearl Mist finally embarked on her highly anticipated inaugural voyage in June 2014. Setting sail from Baltimore to Halifax, Nova Scotia, she instantly proved that she was worth the wait.
Travelers and ship enthusiasts fell in love with her unique size. Because she is significantly smaller than the massive megaships of the Caribbean, she can easily navigate narrower locks, shallow channels, and dock at charming historic ports that larger ships could never reach.
Reimagined for the Modern Era (2023)
To keep up with changing luxury standards, Pearl Seas Cruises commissioned the renowned Miami-based interior design firm Studio DADO for a complete top-to-bottom transformation in early 2023.
The redesign completely refreshed the ship’s interiors with a lighter, brighter palette of blues and taupes, reflecting the coastal landscapes she sails through. Every stateroom (all of which feature private balconies), lounge, and dining room was elevated to represent modern boutique elegance.
